Caterpillar Joins 'Onshoring' Trend

Wall Street Journal -- Caterpillar Inc. is considering relocating some heavy-equipment overseas production to a new U.S. plant, part of a growing movement among manufacturers to bring more operations back home—a shift that will likely spark fierce competition among states for new manufacturing jobs.
The trend, known as onshoring or reshoring, is gaining momentum as a weak U.S. dollar makes it costlier to import products from overseas. Manufacturers are also counting on White House jobs incentives, as well as their ability to negotiate lower prices from U.S. suppliers who were hurt by the downturn and willing to bargain.
After a decade of rapid globalization, economists say companies are seeing disadvantages of offshore production, including shipping costs, complicated logistics, and quality issues.

Now if we could just get more U.S. companies to do the same.

If they would only stop issuing H1B visas so US IT jobs would stop going to non-citizens here.

American workers like construction people have a deep feeling of utilizing heavy equipment made in the USA.

Well, take all your Far Eastern electronics and fill them with Duracell batteries made here in the USA.

I've heard more than one CEO comment that it would be nice to have a plant in the USA for old times' sake but then they comment PEOPLE DON'T CARE.

Send them to phlebotomy school. The major job prerequisites are the ability not to get squicked by blood or needles and the ability to recognize each of the colors used on test tubes. Also a good bedside manner helps. I've learned that they seem to have a very good memory on their past patients.

Not everyone hires phlebotomists. But those who do always seem to have openings for them.

Caterpillar and any of the Detroit Three should get together and put the new production into a mothballed vehicle plant.

The Detroit Three will get money that they desperately need and Caterpillar will get new production space cheaper than they would if they built greenfield.

well, good luck. We need to bring some more work BACK to the US. Unless home is attractive, we won't have any domestic work load for a good long while... and the economy slides further and further and further...

JimL1,

This article is from a source that requires a subscription which is a real shame because I would have liked to read the article.

I prefer that articles submitted on GasBuddy.com be accessible without a subscription.

That sad wail is the sound of my heart breaking ....

Excellent topic;
one that I support wholeheartedly as I search the stores TRYING to BUY AMERICAN.
In certain categories of goods , this has become almost impossible.
Sadly.

Wish I could have read the whole article.

Why post an article that can only be partially read? But the idea sounds like a good plan. What is to be sold in this country, particularly large items that Caterpillar makes, should be made in this country.

It's a cycle. It was cheaper to go over seas and now it's getting cheaper to come back. In twenty years it will be cheaper to go overseas again.

The costs for shipping eat into the benefits of low wages, and when lots of people are out of work, as they are in the US right now, they will tend to work for a somewhat lower wage, which gives manufacturing in the US an advantage, especially so with a weaker US dollar...
