Caterpillar Joins 'Onshoring' Trend

Wall Street Journal -- Caterpillar Inc. is considering relocating some heavy-equipment overseas production to a new U.S. plant, part of a growing movement among manufacturers to bring more operations back home—a shift that will likely spark fierce competition among states for new manufacturing jobs.
The trend, known as onshoring or reshoring, is gaining momentum as a weak U.S. dollar makes it costlier to import products from overseas. Manufacturers are also counting on White House jobs incentives, as well as their ability to negotiate lower prices from U.S. suppliers who were hurt by the downturn and willing to bargain.
After a decade of rapid globalization, economists say companies are seeing disadvantages of offshore production, including shipping costs, complicated logistics, and quality issues.

Gee, you don't suppose that is because Obama is penalizing them for shipping jobs off shore? That is the only reason they would even think about bringing the jobs back to North America.

I'm sure this isn't being done through some sense of nostalgia or patriotism. This is an economic decision. Probably the only bright spot I can think of due to the high cost of transportation.

There should be a tax penalty for companies that off-shore their employees. And there should be a tax break for companies that only hire US citizens.

It my have taken a while to finally realize that cheaper manufacturing prices may not be good for the country as a whole. Keep the jobs and the income here.

The businesses won't come back to Minnesota. Here the answer to budget woes is "find new things to tax, raise the taxes we have, and increase fees.

It's likely that the only way those jobs will really return, is if they can return without union interference. Unions have been death to most jobs in my area.

It's good for the US workers but it is a shame to think what is happening to our dollar. Soon, with all our debt, we will be no better than any 3rd world country. All talk and no money :( SAD

If we don't over regulate corporations and tax them to death, maybe they'll all start coming home and put our work forces back on the payroll and get our finances back on solid ground.
Keep the greedy unions at bay also, those thugs don't need to be involved either.
