GM's Lutz says hybrids, electrics are future

Detroit News -- General Motors Co. will keep making big trucks and SUVs because U.S. buyers demand them, but a major portion of them will be gas-electric hybrids in the near future, retiring Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said.

Lutz didn't give details, but said GM must apply hybrid technology to more vehicles in order to meet fuel-economy standards that will rise 40 percent to an average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020. The cost will likely be spread across GM's lineup, since charging individual buyers for a hybrid system would make vehicles too expensive. GM has seven hybrids in its lineup now.

I think Hybrids are part of our future. I do not see electric doing to much until we have a grid in place with charging stations to meet our needs as a society.

Natural Gas should be what we turn to. We have more than OPEC has in oil. Why not use that? I would convert my autos to NG if possible.

When and if the sales if hybrids begins to leavel the number of autos with fuel combustion engines, the price may decline.

If another resource comes up, then the story will be a bit different.

"The cost will likely be spread across GM's lineup, since charging individual buyers for a hybrid system would make vehicles too expensive." Another reason why I won't buy from GM. Why should the price of my 5 passenger car be raised because someone else wants to buy a road hog, gas hog SUV or pickup?

Those of us who buy small, efficient cars have been subsidizing the SUV driver's for years.

If they all drove our cars, we'd have much lower gasoline prices. Why? Because drivers of fuel efficient cars CONSERVE!!!!!

So now Lutz is a total convert to hybrids, eh? Funny how he has changed his stance from five years ago, when he was busy bashing hybrids.

if one of GM chairman is saying that it is future but GM did not shaw signs of real interest of that future - prime example is Volt - timing and price both are in far future

Good deal if they are all hybrids. But to charge non-hybrid buyers more to support hybrids? I doubt it will fly. That's a simple equation to figure out. So if Ford or Chrysler isn't doing this pricing policy, GM buyers will buy from the other two. No, if hybrid buyers want that extra mileage, and it costs more to build, then they should pay for that value. Charging more money to support their product line will cause me to look at other marks.

Hybrids require more electronics to allow for switching from the gas engine to electric, also how about battery life?

The fact that GM is jumping into the hybrid mania with both feet should immediately tell you that the technology has already reached it's prime. Soon they will need more taxpayer handouts to re-tool for the next greatest thing. Once upon a time GM was at the forefront of automotive technology. Now they can only follow.

Why not go with Diesel. It is cheaper than a Hybird, and has a LOT more low end power, and gets just as good or better milage than hybrid.
